How to prepare furniture and large loose items for a move
When it comes to moving, some items are too big to be packed in regular boxes, but they still need to be prepared properly. These include furniture, machinery and leisure equipment. Here are some important preparation tips to keep in mind:
Furniture:
- Disassemble furniture such as sofas, tables, bookshelves, wardrobes and beds. Remove bones and protruding parts.
- Protect fine surface furniture, mattresses, fabrics and beds by covering them with bubble wrap to avoid dirt and damage.
- Remove shelves and store the loose shelf pins in a bag that is clearly marked and easy to find again. Preferably tape the shelves together.
- Empty all drawers. If the furniture is light enough, we can transport it with the boxes, but make sure to tape them to avoid them falling out during transportation.
Machinery and electronics:
- Contact a qualified professional to unplug dishwashers and washing machines to be moved.
- Drain gasoline and oil from lawn mowers, boat engines and the like.
- Unplug computers and other electrical appliances. Tape cables that cannot be removed. Pack all loose cables in cardboard boxes.

- Roll up carpets and tie them.
