Why a move takes longer than you think

A move is almost always more time-consuming than you think. It's rarely the actual carrying that causes the stress, but the fact that many small things need to be done in the right order. Address change, subscriptions, packing, keys, cleaning and everything that needs to be fitted in between everyday life and work. That's why we at Flytt & Städfix Mälardalen have put together a clear moving checklist that you can tick off point by point. It works whether you're moving from a flat, terraced house or villa, and no matter where you're moving to.

It's most valuable if you want to avoid last-minute solutions. Use it as a simple plan to follow, from the first preparations to when you're in your new home. You can also use it to divide responsibility in the household, so everyone knows what has been done and what remains.

Tick off in order, but skip what doesn't apply to your move. If you hire help with moving, packing, assembly or move-out cleaning, you can often cross off several steps straightaway and instead spend your time on what only you can do, such as decisions, sorting and keys.

The checklist, step by step

From eight weeks before the move to the day after. Work through it in order and skip what does not apply to you.

6 to 8 weeks before the move

  • Fix the moving date and a rough timetable
  • Decide whether to move yourself or get help from a moving company
  • If you want help, book in good time, especially at the turn of the month
  • Decide whether you want help with packing and/or move-out cleaning
  • Start clearing at home: storeroom, wardrobes, kitchen and cellar
  • Plan what is to be sold, given away, recycled or thrown out
  • Check the practicalities: lift, stairwell, entrance, parking, loading bay
  • Keep important papers in one place so they do not end up in a random box

4 to 6 weeks before the move

  • Get hold of removal boxes, tape, labels and packing materials
  • Decide how to label the boxes so unpacking is easy
  • Plan room by room so you do not have to repack
  • Tell us if you have heavy or delicate special items (piano, safe, display cabinets)
  • Think about whether anything needs taking apart and putting back together (bed, wardrobe, table)
  • Decide whether you need storage, briefly or for longer
  • Plan the move-out cleaning: book it or make a plan of your own

2 to 3 weeks before the move

  • Start by packing what you do not use every day
  • Pack methodically and avoid mixed boxes as far as you can
  • Label the boxes clearly with the room and roughly what is inside
  • Keep valuables and important documents separate so they stay with you
  • Plan the change of address and the admin around the move
  • Sort out electricity, internet, alarms and other subscriptions so they are no surprise after you move in
  • Decide what travels in your own car (keys, documents, medicines, electronics)

7 to 10 days before the move

  • Confirm the times and arrangements for the move (start time, address, door code, parking)
  • Sort out keys, fobs and any bookings in the building
  • Pack a "first day" box with what you need straight away
  • Start emptying the fridge and freezer and use up food that would be thrown away
  • Defrost the freezer if needed
  • Get tools and bags for screws ready if you are dismantling furniture

1 to 3 days before the move

  • Pack the last of it and leave out only what you need
  • Gather the boxes and your things together so loading goes faster
  • Dismantle the furniture that needs taking apart and label all the fittings
  • Protect glass, china and electronics especially carefully
  • Double-check the storeroom, attic, cellar, balcony and garage
  • Get the cleaning ready, or make sure the move-out clean is booked

Moving day

  • Keep your phone, charger, keys and ID close to hand
  • Make sure the route out is clear and the loading spot works
  • Keep valuables and documents separate
  • Do a final round: cupboards, wardrobes, storeroom, bathroom and balcony
  • At the new address: show where the boxes go so unpacking is easy
  • Check that everything is aboard before the van leaves

After the move

  • Get the bed, bathroom and kitchen working first
  • Check that the electricity, water and heating work as they should
  • Check that the internet is ordered or switched on as planned
  • Unpack the essentials and take the rest at a pace that suits you
  • Gather receipts and paperwork if you have used RUT for the move and/or the cleaning
  • Finish the key handover and anything else to be handed on
